B+E Accreditation Scheme

The new voluntary B+E trailer training accreditation scheme has been developed in collaboration with the driving and trailer industries to equip motorists with the skills, knowledge, and competencies required for safe towing.

The government is committed to road safety and encourages professional training for drivers towing trailers for leisure or business purposes.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Department for Transport (DfT), working with the trailer training industry, have formed the National Council for Accredited Trailer Training (NCATT) to oversee the scheme and establish best practices for safe towing.

VTCT Skills for Logistics’ B+E accreditation scheme, officially recognised by the DVSA, will accredit centres and instructors while ensuring quality assurance and certification.

The B+E accreditation scheme is designed for:

  • Drivers towing trailers for leisure or business, ensuring they have the necessary skills, knowledge, and competencies to tow safely.
  • Employees who tow trailers for work, helping employers meet their corporate responsibilities by promoting safe working practices.

FAQs

About B+E Training
  • What is the B+E training syllabus?

The B+E training syllabus outlines how to train drivers in the essential skills, knowledge, and understanding required to tow a trailer safely and responsibly with a category B motor vehicle, including cars, vans, and pick-up trucks.

Developed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in partnership with the Trailer Towing Advisory Group (TTAG), this syllabus supports the goal of ensuring road safety across Britain.

To learn more about the requirements for B+E drivers, visit the government website.

  • What are the aims of the syllabus?

The B+E training syllabus equips drivers with the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to safely tow a trailer with a category B vehicle. Upon successful completion, drivers will be able to demonstrate the following 12 competencies:

    • Prepare the vehicle for a journey.
    • Guide and control the vehicle while towing.
    • Reverse the vehicle with the trailer attached.
    • Safely uncouple and recouple the trailer.
    • Navigate according to the Highway Code.
    • Drive safely and responsibly within the traffic system.
    • Understand road safety benefits.
    • Use fuel-saving driving techniques.
    • Apply safe driving techniques.
    • Ensure safe loading practices.
    • Demonstrate vehicle-handling techniques.
    • Adhere to legislative requirements.

Training is evaluated through ongoing or final assessments, conducted by a course trainer or qualified individual.

  • Who can take advantage of this training?

Any driver with a category B driving license can participate in this training to improve their towing competence. Drivers will gain the skills and knowledge needed to demonstrate they have maintained and enhanced their competence since obtaining their category B license.

From December 16th, 2021, individuals in the UK who passed the DVSA category B driving test after January 1st, 1997, are allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500 KG MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass).

  • How is the training structured?

Training follows the DVSA syllabus, offering a blend of theory and practical elements. The duration is tailored to each driver’s abilities and their progress toward meeting the training objectives.

  • Vehicle and trailer combinations

Drivers should train with a vehicle-trailer combination that matches their needs, whether a lighter combination or a heavier load. The towing combinations fall into three broad groups:

    • Unbraked trailers: Trailers with a permitted weight of 750kg or lower, generally used for household goods or gardening waste. If the trailer has brakes, they must be in working order.
    • Medium-sized vehicles and trailers: These combinations have a combined MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) of the towing vehicle and trailer that is less than 3,500kg.
    • Large category B vehicles towing large braked trailers: Includes horse trailers, larger caravans, and trailers carrying small machinery.

For example, a large 4×4 SUV with a MAM of 3,500kg towing a trailer of the same MAM.

Whatever you tow, it is essential to learn how to operate safely. Find out more about safe towing by visiting our GOV.UK safe towing guidance .
