ST0257: Large goods vehicle (LGV) driver C + E Level 2

The role of an LGV Driver apprentice will be to learn the many tasks required to drive and operate a goods vehicle safely and efficiently. It also prepares learners to interact and communicate with internal colleagues and customers.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to drive large goods vehicles, (vehicles with a Gross Combined Weight of over 7500kg), in a safe and fuel-efficient manner, ensuring that the right products are delivered at the right time, location, condition and temperature (if required), with the correct documentation and within the shortest lead times. An LGV Driver may work within one or multiple sub sectors, including but not limited to removals, shipping, freight, import/export, hazardous goods, and food.

An LGV driver may be required to work shifts, unsociable hours and will usually work alone.

Gateway requirements

The decision to take an apprentice through Gateway is made between the employer, training provider and apprentice, typically after 13 months on-programme.

The apprentice must have completed all on-programme elements before they enter Gateway, including:

EPA consists of three assessment methods: a practical assessment, a multiple-choice test and an interview.
