The role of an International Freight Forwarding Specialist is to coordinate the shipment of cargo to ensure the employer and clients they work with remain compliant with all applicable customs, import and export laws, and regulations.

The broad purpose of the International Freight Forwarding Specialist is to support the movement of goods between countries and territories. International Freight Forwarding Specialists are expected to take responsibility for booking shipments and will prepare the documentation required to move goods in and out of the UK and countries anywhere in the world. They ensure that all goods are shipped in accordance with all relevant customs rules and regulatory regimes. They will often use a mix of online systems and electronic and paper documentation to support the transportation of the goods. An International Freight Forwarding Specialist will required to work with a mix of in-house IT systems and on-line sources to find information about relevant customs rules, regulations and terms of trade. If required they should be comfortable with escalating problems and issues to senior staff in their organisation.

It is key responsibility of the International Freight Forwarding Specialist to ensure that the company they work for and their clients remain compliant with all applicable customs, import and export laws and regulations. An International Freight Forwarding Specialist usually works in an office-based role, mostly in normal working hours, but with occasional work outside those hours.

Gateway requirements

The decision to take an apprentice through Gateway is made between the employer, training provider and apprentice, typically after 18 months on-programme.

The apprentice must have completed all on-programme elements before they enter Gateway, including:

Complete the on-programme stage of the Level 3 International Freight Forwarding Specialist Apprenticeship Standard and consistently work at or above the level of the occupational standard

Submit a portfolio of evidence which will underpin the professional discussion

Achieve English and mathematics qualifications in line with the apprenticeship funding rules

End-point Assessment (EPA) Criteria

EPA consists of three assessment methods: a multiple choice test, a practical assessment and a professional discussion, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
